I notice that a lot of people think the PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibition at The Met is all wrong - and that ‘punk’ had nothing to do with fashion. I strongly disagree…
In the UK punk WAS a fashion statement before the music. The first punks in the UK were the gay crowd, the art school crowd, and the fashion crowd. This was before the SEX PISTOLS even existed.
We also have to understand that the PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibition isn’t simply a ‘punk fashion show’ - the point of the exhibition is the influence of punk clothing and punk style on the fashion industry and fashion designers, and how that influence still exists over 35 years later. And that’s pretty much all it is. So people really should not get hung up about the music aspect of it all. That’s not what this exhibition is about.
